Siren Song
Kunsthal Rønnebæksholm 2021
Bronze, headphones, sound
Very few women are depicted in public sculptures. In Denmark, approximately 1% of sculptures represent females, and the ones that do, often depict mythological creatures or fictional characters. The most famous sculpture in Denmark depicts a diminutive looking naked mermaid and this sculpture has been surrounded by controversy since its inauguration, as it has been vandalized several times.
Mermaid as a mythological creature exists all over the world. Scandinavia, Europe, Greece, Asia all have monstrous underwater females that represent the forces of nature.
The piece Siren Song is a bronze sculpture of a mermaid head (somewhat similar to The Little Mermaid) and a sound piece. The sound piece is a narration of the mermaid’s life throughout history, from mythological times to the future. Throughout her life she has been abused by humans and in the post apocalyptic future, she tells about a world that has been flooded, submerged in water, and given back to the monsters.
Inspired by Danish folk songs and kulning a form of high-pitched calls used by women in Scandinavia to communicate over long distances), "Siren Song" transforms despair into a call for collective action. Unveiled in Paris, the installation, whether seen or heard, invites audiences to envision a future where awareness sparks change.
This composition delves into the mermaid's journey from mythological times to a post-apocalyptic future, highlighting the environmental impacts humans have inflicted. The submerged world she describes, flooded and reclaimed by monsters, serves as a poignant metaphor for the consequences of climate change.
The lyrics of the song exists in both English and Danish
In the decapitated state that I’m in
I’m more visionary than ever
From my sea bed position I say with a grin
that humanity won’t last forever
I’m known as a monster of evil and good
Mythology made me a beast
Hear me sing and cling onto driftwood
Come down, come join me in my feast
They thought that i would show them the way
I am desired by men, they want my flesh
They cut off my head and my arm
caught in the net of the fishermens’ mesh
I’m making a trap with my charm
The world of men is so hideous
I dream of a new paradigm
I’ll take my revenge on Odysseus
The mermaids will sing in the prime time
And nature is getting her way
Folklore drew a grotesque of my sin
And pop culture made me a virgin
I learned to transform from the evil within
I didn’t get help from a surgeon
I see the future in the ocean deep
when I’m floating and getting my beauty sleep
The waves are so elegant seen from below
I feel any time with an afterglow
The future is coming our way
When the world of the future is coming
The human world is succumbing
The land has been swallowed by oceans
As deep as the human emotions
Goodbye to the damaging age of men
The sea levels have extended
Monstrosity prevails again
The reign of man has been ended
And now I have gotten my way
